Texoma’s Turning Over: A Fall Fishing Frenzy!
Fall has arrived on Lake Texoma, and with it, a whole new world of fishing opportunities. As the water temperature cools and the leaves begin to turn, the fish are feeling the change too. They’re actively feeding, preparing for the winter months ahead, which means anglers are in for a treat!
The Turnover Effect:
Right now, Lake Texoma is experiencing the “fall turnover.” This natural phenomenon occurs as the surface water cools, becomes denser, and sinks to the bottom. This mixing action redistributes oxygen and nutrients throughout the lake, triggering a feeding frenzy among many species.
What’s Biting and Where to Find Them:
- Striped Bass: The stripers are on the move! They’re chasing schools of shad in open water, making them prime targets for trolling with deep-diving crankbaits or umbrella rigs. Look for birds diving on the surface – that’s a sure sign of stripers feeding below. Don’t forget to try topwater lures like Spooks and Redfins early in the morning or late in the evening.
- Smallmouth Bass: The cooler water invigorates smallmouth, and they’re actively feeding around rocky points, ledges, and submerged structure. Target them with crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs in crawfish or shad patterns. Ned rigs and drop-shot rigs with finesse worms are also excellent choices.
- Largemouth Bass: Largemouth are moving shallower as the water cools, seeking warmer temperatures near the shoreline. Focus your efforts around docks, weed beds, and fallen trees. Texas-rigged worms, creature baits, and spinnerbaits are all productive lures.
- Crappie: Crappie are starting to school up around brush piles and deeper structure. Use your electronics to locate these fish-holding areas and drop down small jigs tipped with minnows or soft plastics. Vertical jigging or slow trolling are effective techniques.
Tips for Fall Success:
- Pay attention to the wind: Wind plays a crucial role in fall fishing. It creates current and pushes baitfish, concentrating game fish in certain areas. Look for wind-blown points and shorelines.
- Fish the transitions: Fish often concentrate around areas where there’s a change in depth, structure, or water temperature. Pay close attention to these transitions.
- Be patient and persistent: Fall fishing can be unpredictable. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different lures and techniques until you find what works.
